Are you happy with your IT career?

Ever since my childhood I always wondered what would be the happiest profession in the world.
I started making some analysis and research to find it. But before I could start this article,I want to know how many of you are happy with your profession?

In other words, How many of you are happy being an IT professional?

If your ans is yes, well and good, If its NO then this article is especially for you.

I had a discussion with my Maths teacher.

As we all think that Teaching is the happiest and peaceful profession, I had the same idea too.

After having a tea time discussion, I came to know the cons of being a Maths teacher.
  • She has been taking the same syllabus for the past 30 years with just minor changes in the examination pattern once in 5 years
  • She has been writing on black board with chalk piece and has inhaled so much of dust.
  • Only few schools has started using white board and marker.  She has to be on time to school. Even a minute late will let her sign in the late register and she is accountable for students lives as their maths marks decides their future and the career they step into.
  • Let me keep teaching aside.

Take Driving as a Profession.

  • We are very much frustrated to drive in traffic just for an hour.  Then just imagine the profession of being a driver.
  • Throughout their life they drive irrespective of hot sun or long traffic.
  • They are addressed only as drivers. Not by their names.

I want to share another profession less talked about.

Fancy items sellers on trains.

Their plights:
  • She ought to commute in peak hours and she has to make attractive statements for you to buy.She earns around 250 to 500 per day based on the no of trains she travels and based on the no of time she shouts. If she doesn't go to work for a day, her 500 Indian Rupees is gone.

There are pros and cons in every profession that I've stated  and in every profession that I am about to state.  I want to highlight only the cons of every other profession apart from IT.

How can I miss a doctor?

  • Well, I want to give a personal example again. My cousin is a gynecologist by profession.
  • She hardly attends any family function and has 24*7 duty. I cant blame her. Its her profession.
  • She is incharge of two human lives. It matters more than anything else.
  • She seems to be like a character in a book. We just speak about her. We hardly see her.

There is another profession which I've experimented it by myself.

Armed forces.

  • Again they have 24*7 duty. They hardly get time for their family.
  • Uniform, boots and PT are part of their lives.
  • They get habituated of being lonely and guarding our borders.

For instance, take an actor. He does so much of characters on screen,

  • At the end, he doesn't know to which character he belongs to.

Again none of the above stated professions are for charity. At the end of the day everyone chooses a profession as a way to earn their living.

Having said all the above cons, Its time for me to state some pros of being an IT professional

  • Your work is always air conditioned
  • You do not have any particular syllabus to follow. There is endless of learning, opportunities and technologies.
  • Unlike a doctor,You dont want anyone to fall sick for you to earn money.
  • Infact you want your customers to live forever so that they can continue doing business with you
  • Unlike a soldier,You dont want an enemy for you to do your duty. Infact you dont have enemies,
  • You have competitors so that you do your work better.
  • You dont have to physically strain yourself. if you have established yourself in work,
  • You can work from home and your still paid.
  • You dont have daily wages. You are paid for weekends and outings too.
  • Even if you feel you've developed a piece of junk,
  • As long as it works right, As long as it satisfies your customer, You are paid enough.
  • You dont have to settle down in one particular country.
  • Whole world is your home. You keep travelling across the globe for your business.
  • You dont follow any hierarchy. You dont salute your CEO or have the necessity to call anyone Sir or Mam.
  • You call everyone by name and develop a sense of camaraderie at work place
  • You are a mix of every other profession
  • You are a teacher when you give KT (Knowledge Transition) to your juniors
  • You are an artist when you design your own websites
  • You are a soldier when you defend your business from your competitor.
  • You are seller when you market your products and deliverable
  • You are an actor when you act according to your customer's needs
  • You are a social worker when you build technology for a cause.
  • Every other profession depends on you to modernize themselves
  • You have a very stylish name for your profession "IT professional"

So far,you might have felt there is no respect if you call yourself an IT professional. I hope this article brought a change in you.

Only when you respect your field others will start respecting it.

Above all, You are building technology to make this world a better place.

Start loving it. Start feeling the change.

Have a Happy Life
